The Trane Company of Lacrosse Wisconsin makes available an Engineered Conversion for all qualified Trane Centravacs to contractors meeting certain qualifications. These qualified contractors must sign a form acknowledging that all labor including the removal of the motor from the chiller and shipment to the Trane designated motor shop is the responsibility of the contractor. Included in this is the return of the converted motor and the reassembly of the Centravac using the Trane supplied gaskets and "O" rings.

Major Air Systems Ltd. is a pre-qualified contractor and has signed an agreement with The Trane Company

When MAJOR AIR purchases a Trane Engineered Conversion from the Trane Company, The Trane company supplies all the material required plus new engineering capacity selection. The Trane company is

responsible for all the actual motor conversion and the supply of all the proper conversion materials. The MAJOR AIR is responsible for disassembly and reassembly of the Centravac using these supplied materials so that all specified clearances and tolerances are adhered to just the same way as MAJOR AIR would if doing an ordinary rebuild and not an Engineered Conversion. All if these practices and procedures should be exactly the same for a rebuild or an Engineered Conversion.

The Trane Service Agency Toronto buys the same Engineered Conversion package as the prequalified Major Air Systems from the same division of The Trane Company as Major Air Systems Ltd. Any difference in price between the quotes of both Major Air and Trane Service would be the mark up of the Trane Engineered Conversion along with the price charged for labor and the amount of labor.

The major part of the conversion is the motor conversion which is done by Herma Motor service. All the Conversion parts, specifications and procedures are supplied to Trane Service and Major Air by The Trane Company.

All of Major Air's mechanics have at least ten years experience rebuilding Trane Centravacs. Some of these same mechanics have been rebuilding Trane Centravacs for more than thirty years and have worked for the Trane Service Company for more than fifteen years in the past. Major Air Systems Ltd. is a specialist in servicing, repair and retrofitting centrifugal and absorption chillers.

Herma Motor Services

Herma Motor Services Inc. is the Canadian agent for Trane Engineered Conversions. Every Trane centrifugal motor converted to R-123 compatibility under The Canadian Trane Engineered Conversion is converted to R-123 by Herma Motor Services Inc.

Since Major Air Systems Ltd. is an Authorized Signatory to The Trane Contractor Acknowledgement Responsibility Form, all Trane Centravac Engineered Conversions purchased from The Trane Company by Major Air Systems would have the motor (all mechanical and electrical) converted by Herma Motor Services Inc. to R-123 specifications.

Trane R123 Engineered Conversions:

The Trane Company will make the Trane Engineered Conversion material package available to any contractor signing the Contractor Acknowledgement Responsibility Form. This package includes all Trane engineering services and all necessary materials to effect a Trane Engineered Conversion.

The Contractor Acknowledgement Responsibility Form delineates the responsibilities of the respective parties- the Trane Company assumes responsibility for the engineering and material package; the contractor assumes responsibility for the proper installation and operation of the Engineered Conversion package.

Carrier Conversions to R-123

Carrier does not offer an engineered conversion package. Carrier will not guarantee a tonnage capacity after converting a Carrier chiller to R-123. Carrier does not officially work on R-123. Some Carrier offices will change the refrigerant in a Carrier chiller to R-123.

Major Air Systems Ltd. offers a change of refrigerant in Carrier chillers to R-123

A 19C Carrier chillers can be converted if required. The kilowatt per ton ratio is high compared to a new Centrifugal chiller. The original tonnage of a 19C chiller can be obtained after conversion by replacing the impellers with impellers specifically designed for operation with R-123. If the chiller is located in a mechanical room that is prohibitive to replacement then conversion is now an option.

19 DG, 19DH, 19DK, & 19DM chillers can be converted by just changing the gaskets and "O" rings along the motor rewind and refrigerant replacement. This is a chancy conversion as there would be no way of knowing the actual tonnage that would be lost by converting to R-123. Some of the Carrier chillers operating with R-11 manufactured after 1995 actually had gaskets, "O" rings and motors that were by law, R-123 compatible. Carrier however would not charge these chillers with R-123 as Carrier took a position that their mechanics would not work on R-123. These chillers had to be charged with R-11 if Carrier were to start them up.

These chillers can be converted from R-11 to R-123 with a tonnage guarantee using Carrier parts but Engineering done by others. Sometimes, the volute, impellers are changed along with the addition of eliminators in the evaporator. Many times, the original tonnage can be obtained with a lower kilowatt per ton ratio than the original specification. Major Air recommends doing a conversion this way rather than just the refrigerant change.

Refrigerant Conversions

MAJOR AIR SYSTEMS LTD. offers Trane engineered conversions of Trane Centravacs along with Engineered Carrier conversions, and conversions of York centrifugals to R-123.from R-11. Major Air is a signatory to the Trane engineered conversion program (see documents). Conversions are completed as required in the Mechanical refrigeration Code B52-05 section 5.12

Major Air also offers mechanical room upgrades for CSA B 52 compliance for machines that have been converted to R-123 including refrigerant monitors. Major Air also has test equipment to test the monitors at the Government imposed allowable exposure level (AEL) in parts per million to comply with the once a year test specified in the B52-05 Mechanical Refrigeration Code (8.4.1.d)
